Horse or Horses On Site !!
There are definite signs of a horse or horses being on the site this last week (Sat 31st Jan). The signs were not there last week (Sat 24th Jan). (Before you rush down, I saw little damage – just horse shoe footprints). The horses in the adjacent field were seen being removed on Monday – a horse box and police cars were seen.
Does anyone have any further news? Were the horses removed because of the depth of surface water in the field? Because they had escaped? Or what?
John
There were horses on the site. They got out of the field onto the Main Road. The Council have now purchased fencing to complete the track side of the allotments. Hopefully this will keep the horses out once and for all.
When I first heard about the horses getting in I visited the site during my lunch break to see if there was any damage, only to find 4 goats there happily chomping away!
A horse had obviously run straight across my garlic and asparagus beds, sinking in several inches. Some of my garlic is now planted a bit deeper than it was before!
Finally managed to find time to get down to the plot – first time since the snow – no signs of horse / goat damage except for a few hoof prints.
Does any one know what has happened to the water supply? Neither standpipe seems to be working.
Hello,
Sorry to have a moan, but I don’t know if anyone else has trouble with the main barrier to the site. I can barely lift it on and off to get in when I am on my own.
Also, I have noticed that there are a few paths that have stuff piled up on them, reducing what should be a 2 foot path to barely 1 foot. This is fine in the winter months, but when the summer comes and we have to mow them / walk along them carrying watering cans they become a bit of an obstacle course. Do you think we can have a reminder to people not to block paths please? Just because they may not use the path at the back of their plot, doesn’t mean that other people dont!
Are we allowed to keep bees? Would anyone object? I think it would be a great fun project from building the hive to getting the honey. I have been reading about top bar hives which are simpler and possibly more natural for the bees. They are great pollinators so would be good for all the plots.
Hi Alan
I have sent an email to the Town Council asking about the bees…it’s a very interesting idea, let’s see what they say.
David
I would be happy having bees on site, too.
Also interested in keeping bees on the F/bro road. It’s something we’ve often discussed but never progressed. However, the idea of 6ft fencing all round does not appeal at all! Seems to me that we’re quite lucky at F/bro road because we have quite a broad border around the whole site. I would have thought that there might be space in a corner somewhere so that the bees wouldn’t “interfere” with plot holders.
the 6 foot fence ramps up the cost and space requirements quite a bit. I would certainly be interested in sharing the costs (and honey) if we can have a shared corner in the border, or even a whole plot in a corner with just grass and hives. The fence cost is still a problem. Maybe a fine net would be sufficient to get the bees to fly out at altitude.
Myself and my husband do not agree with the bee keeping at the farnborough road allotments. It is an allotment for the growing of veg and fruit and I would not bee happy to know there are bees are the site. If this is beeing considered I hope a large notice will put on the board to ask other peoples opinion as not everyone looks on the web site and I am sure we will not bee the only ones against it.
…and I am sure we will not bee the only ones against it.
Is that a pun Shirley or a serious post?! Personally I don’t see what the problem is as long as the hive isn’t on top of anyone’s plot.
This isn’t going to happen out-of-the-blue, it will be discussed with the Town Council and all opinions taken into account.
Shirley, the bees pollinate your fruit and veg. Technically I think the current rules allow chickens or rabbits bred for food to be kept (my chickens are in the garden and munching on a bunny burger doesn’t appeal to me) so it isn’t purely fruit and veg. It certainly would need proper discussion and a great big yellow and black stripy notice on the board.

I do know that bees pollinate! I welcome the wild bees on my plot, but that doesnt mean to say I want bee hives on the allotment. I also know about the chickens but have yet to meet someone who actually has any. Mmmm theres a thought does anyone mind if we have a few chickens on site ?
You are perfectly entitled to keep chicken on your allotment Shirley, I’m sure it’s part of the tenancy agreement so you don’t need to ask! As Alan says they do require daily attention though so it would only really work if you live very close to your plot.
I have chickens at home, but I wouldn’t put them on the allotment. They need to be locked up at night and let out to their run at breakfast time. If you live really close to the site then it might work. Bees don’t need daily attention.
Kevin – thank you for fixing the barrier. Even us little girlies can manage it now. I assume you read Paula’s comment above and acted on it ?
It seems the Shepherd and Flock site are getting new taps.
Our Farnborough Road allotment site only has two taps. It is a long walk with a watering can for many of us. I wouldn’t suppose there are any plans to add a third tap nearer the south west corner? I will help with the digging if necessary.
Yes but we’re paying for them John. We (the tenants) are going to pay a plumber to put in a couple of new standpipes although annoylingly we’ve left it too late for this year since the ground is now baked hard like concrete!
