I have a plot on the Farnborough Rd site and there is a problem with deer getting in. During the summer they went for the runner beans and now its the cabbages and autumn sown broad beans. I believe the anti deer fence is not high enough and wonder if there is anything that can be done as it’s pretty soul destroying to see crops ruined
I don’t believe the fence is intended to keep deer out. Deer fences need to be about 7 or 8 feet high to keep deer out. Yes they nibble stuff – especially the maize in 2008 ! – and there is not a lot we can do about it except either accept it or net your most treasured plants.
Yes deer are powerful and resourceful animals easily able to jump 6 or 7 foot with little run-up. To actually stop deer from getting into any of the sites would cost a fortune and alas the Town Council cannot run to this level of protection – it was discussed today at the meeting.
I keep my brassicas netted at all times anyway. Either to keep butterflies, pigeons or deer off. Deer will still trample over and attempt to get in but if you’re resourceful enough and use a strong structure they will not get in.
