Hosepipe Ban

What is the general opinion of the hosepipe ban that has recently been applied by South East Water? Sensible precaution or a bl**dy cheek? Please use the comments section to raise any points or concerns that you may have.

  1. Sensible precaution but I hope the taps will be left on so that we can water with a can!

  2. If water is short then I understand the need but a ban this early in the year is a concern. I think it’s the govt. hoarding water for fear of the extra demand come summer and Olympics time!

  3. People need to be aware that water is not made in factories and that after two dry winters we face a serious shortage. It is not the fault of water companies if it doesn’t rain and it is our responsibility to use this most precious resource wisely. I never water my allotment anyway, except when planting out brassicas. There is, unfortunately a perception that we have plenty of water, but in the south east there is less water available per head of population per annum than in Spain !

  4. There seems to be a perception at the Six Bells site that this is somehow Kevin Taitt’s fault, which unfair to say the least.

Gardeners (presumably including allotmenteers) account for less than 10% of water usage. But, I do see frequent examples of people wasting it. For I can’t see the necessity of watering asparagus beds when half an inch down the soil is damp.

I think introducing the ban now has given people an opportunity to plan ahead; mulching, building dams around plants etc, so is probably a good thing.

  5. That’s right, South East Water have imposed the ban and not Kevin – you might want to try to get that message across.

  6. South East Water have today lifted the hose pipe ban
